Listening to the locals / learning curve

After yesterdays rocket like start , I manged to get a grip on things and slow to a pace more in keeping with my surroundings . Did get the inside of the "A" cleaned up a little and then did the same for myself
the usual ,trim the hair , shave , brush the remaining teeth , etc . Did I mention the closest  barber is 80 miles away ? Doesn't matter I've been trimming my own hair for years anyway , has something to do with not giving a damn what other people think , plus there are not many fashion police in Terlingua !
Perambulated over to the Kowgirl's for a late lunch and beverage , a few locals holding court and some of my new acquaintences had some interesting things to say . A popular subject is , all these people moving in and wanting to make it like where they just came from ! Sound familiar ? Personally the way it is here suits me just fine , but I know exactly what they mean . The older folks who have been here since the fifties or so recount how it was when this was all ranches and free range , it must have been something , but sure had to be a rough existence .  One local historian told of how the damn guvmint came in and condemned the ranches to acquire land for Big Bend National Park , there is still a strong current of distaste for anything to do with the federal guvmint and from what I can see well justified . The bad guy illegal alien thing not withstanding these folks can manage quite nicely on  their own , thank you .
I'm sure there is crime here although you don't see or hear much about it . Rude ,offensive behavior isn't tolerated and since there are no local cops and the sheriff is spread pretty thin the problem is handled quietly and the problem disappears . I haven't heard of any of the bad guys from the other side of the border making too much of a fuss in this area , apparently the few incidents that have occured have been dealt with and now the bad guys go on up the road . Since there is only the one road out ,Tx 118 the border patrol has a station and patrols it fairly heavily  . I suppose if you were intent on doing some trafficing you could go off road , but you better be real well equipped , like maybe a tank or half track , this is some damn unforgiving country and it won't suffer a fool or an amateur . there are lots of stories about the tourist who was just going to walk over to that big hill and climb up to look around . Not realizing that big hill is a mountain 6 or 7 miles away and the desert bites them hard . The lucky ones get found and there are the unlucky ones who get found later , Darwin in action . I really like this country it weeds out the dumb ones in a hurry !
Today's learning curve I found out yesterday that the restaurant Rio Bravo occupies the former post office , there are a number of buildings I'm looking at that were formerly something else and a lot of them have been here for some time , more exploration is required .
Went to the store yesterdaty for ice and whatnot and snapped a couple of pictures of the mall and then later of Rio Bravo . The store doesn't look like much , but you are welcome to drive 80 miles up to Alpine if you choose .
Listening to some Waylon and George Strait this morning , seems appropriate for a breezy Saturday ,
perhaps after another cup of coffee I'll do something ... or not ....
