Riding The Porch / La Kiva / A Minnie Winnie Fan

Yesterday afternoon took a ride to the Terlingua Trading Post to round up some new books on the area . Found Tales Of The Terlingua  Porch {Blair Pittman] and Tales Of The Big Bend [Elton Mles ] , stories of the area from the last fifty years or so . Their were some hardy characters living in this area , and many still live here !
There are quite a few books available on this area in particular and even more on west Texas in general , it would be nice to see these included in required reading for schools , the legacy of the early settlers might be how to survive in a hostile environment . I've said the same thing about early Florida history also , what a stong bunch of people they must have been to survive and create a home out of that wilderness !
The Terlingua Porch stretches some sixty feet along the front of the Trading Post and the Starlight with well worn benches to sit and pass the time on . The atmosphere is as comfortable as any front room you've ever been in and the view across the valley is hard to describe , many of the locals make this their afternoon pit stop to catch up on the goings on or just relax and enjoy a cold libation from a cooler . Titles and degrees of education fall to the wayside and everybody is on the same level , it's sometimes hard to tell whether you're talking to a Phd or the guy who delivers water or maybe even an elected official or it might be some guy who is just traveling through from Florida !  Conversation runs along the usual with the exception there is not much talk of politics or even this quagmire we call economy , as one of the Porch sitters said "ain't no one guy gonna fix it nohow ! " . But the weather and local gossip more than fills the bill and once in a while , some gems pop up that would surprise some people , yesterday one was , the lines of power that extend around the earth and a theory on magnetism that binds them together and how these lines are effecting the way people act and live . This wasn't some nutcase on a street corner , it was a group of eight or ten educated folks discussing the probability and possibility of such an event . [ Britney, Angelina , Lindsay and Brad were not mentioned ] I did my part and waited on La Kiva to open at Five .
La Kiva is another palce where you can escape to for a late afternoon cool one or a good meal , built esentialy in a cave , it's cool dark and comfortable , pull up a rock or tree stump or if you are early enough a chair and meet some very interesting people ! I met people from East Texas , New Mexico , California and North Carolina in the space of an hour . Most were younger and were here to do a river ride and a couple were just here to look around . Everyone was definetly having a good time . I ordered a plate of smoked brisket , beans and cole slaw , had three ice cold Lone Star draughts at a $1 apiece and was one happy camper , and as an added attraction the service was great ! Satisfied beyond words I traveled back to my spot and settled in for the evening
Later on as I was reading a tapping on the door surprised me and Cliff from Oregon poked his head in and informed me He was a Minnie Winnie fan , has one back in Oregon a 78 just like "A" . His is stock and only has 40k on it ! He uses it when he goes by himself camping , when on the road he has a newer one for his wife and himself , but still likes the smaller one better. We talked for a spell and he left to get an early start today headed for New Mexico .
Ma and Pa left yesterday afternoon , I sure will miss them ! As far as I could tell they never came out of their box , must have been the air didn't agree with them .
The campground is emptying out today , hard to believe these folks see everything in one or two days perhaps the lack of Attractions ? makes them in such a hurry ? ! Tex next door and I are about the only ones left , as I watch these folks load up I think how lucky I was in finding "A" as nice as those big land yachts arethey sure are a pain to take care of . By the by at The Porch yesterday one old fellow asked me if I had a name for my camper , preparing to give an explanation I told him "Azad " and he said "Oh , you're a Thoreau fan ? " I replied "Yep " and shut up . You never know who you're talking to out here !
A couple of pictures at La Kiva ...
